Lives up to its name posted on 2008-12-24
Whilst the photo output might not compare to that of a digital SLR or a very high end compact, I don't think that people looking at this camera are in that market: I wanted a camera I could take anywhere and take some good photos without worrying about the camera being damaged by the environment, or quite frankly, my stupidity. The Olympus mju tough seemed to fit the bill and so I bought it, along with a 2GB memory card.

To date I have used it in all weathers (rain/snow/sun), all temperatures (subzero to excess of 40 degC), underwater, above ground, night time, day time...all with very reasonable results. I can certainly say that the camera has lived up to its name and is certainly tough: I took a very heavy fall landing ON the camera at very high speed during a cycle road race and whilst the camera had some visible impact damage to the exterior, the optics still functioned and it was still watertight. This surprised me greatly as it such a fall would have completely destroyed any other camera (which I have done before...oops). I'm still using the camera with no problems.

I agree with a previous reviewer that when operating at the maximum zoom the focus is pretty soft and to get the most out of the camera you have to make full use of the mode settings.

If you are in the market for a compact camera which you can take fantastic photos with minimum fuss, in all light conditions and a sharp zoom, then this is probably not the camera for you. However, if you want a camera to take on your adventures without having to worry about it breaking on you and still being able to produce some good pictures then this is the one: as an active sports camera I couldn't recommend it enough.
 
Tough but flawed posted on 2008-06-12
I bought this camera to use when mountaineering, mountain biking and other camera-damaging activities. I have no doubts as to its toughness, but I am very disappointed about its functionality.

First things first. I have a real problem with the screen. There is no optical viewfinder, so all composition has to be done via the screen on the rear of the camera. In anything like normal sunlight, the screen is practically useless. I've tried all the contrast/brightness alterations I can, but the screen remains hopeless.

The lens should be a good one: Olympus have a fine reputation for their lenses. However, while the wide angle to standard end of the focal length range is good, at the telephoto end the images are distinctly soft. Sharpening in Photoshop helps a little, but there is a fundamental lack of sharpness in all images taken at the longer end of the lens' range.

Given that the camera is designed for rugged use, the controls are fiddly and undersized. They also feel cheap and nasty. I certainly couldn't use the camera with gloves on; which many users surely need to do, even if the gloves are just mountain biking ones. Speaking of hands-it is all to easy to get a finger across the lens, as it is positioned at the top and to one side of the front of the camera.

So, I'm disappointed. The camera does have good features-apart from its much hyped ruggedness it is lightweight and compact, reproduces colours accurately and is well specified in terms of scene functions. But, for me, none of that makes up for the problems of using the camera in even average bright light and for the deficiencies of the lens at longer focal lengths. So, 3 months in, I'm selling my 790SW. Shame.

I bought this camera for a holiday to Australia last month.I'd buy the xd card through Amazon for £9 for a 2GB.The camera was fantastic for using in the sea,pool or on the beach.I dropped it in the sand and just wash it off in the sea!The picture quality is really sharp and lots of extra modes make it easy to use.Brilliant to use,and with 2GB on tap,the video footage you get from it is a real bonus for such a small camera.Buy one now you won't regret it one bit!

it's a perfect holiday camera, backpacking is tough on cameras but this camera is a tough little bugger.
 
Olympus Mju Tough 790 SW - as tough as they come posted on 2007-12-25
I bought this for my daughter for Christmas. Its really simple to pick-up an start shooting with little effort. The XD Memory card (2GB bought separately) allows you to capture tons of HQ images and even has the red and blue 3D glasses as XD captures these to bring depth to your pictures. We are still to really test it in the mud and wet, but its a winner on first impressions. Chris
